Over the last few years, we often tend to disregard the importance of good lifestyle in one way or the other. Still medicines still help us. Several drugs has been found to be effectual in treating sexual health problems in patients who are capture antidepressants. Many people order online such remedies like Viagra. Topics such as “http://departstreaminfo.biz/” and “cialis online” are so pop now. What professionals talk about “cialis 20 mg“? Other question we must is “cialis 20mg“. Because some of sexual problems are medicinal emergencies, it’s significant to know what to do if they happen. The Blog Blogs Itself -or- Why People Hate OWS, Take 2

I just got back from vacay. I opened this blog up with the vague notion that I needed to post something. As a procrastination I looked at my dashboard for recent comments that might need moderating, and found this gem from “sub” on Why People Hate OWS:

here’s why we hate it, genius. because it’s filled with people who want someone else to do their work on this earth, people filled with a vile and arrogant sense of entitlement, people who are anti-social and violent. people who are anti-capitalist (this is a capitalist country, you f’ing idiots, there are plenty that aren’t, move there), people that think that the world owes them something.

and for everyone of these spoiled middle class white kids (didn’t notice that “the movement” is overwhelmingly white), there is an immigrant kid, around the corner from these vile “demonstrations”, working his arse off to get ahead. I’m with him, not with you.

The angry tone of this comment is it’s most noteworthy feature. I sincerely doubt that the commenter’s written reason for his hatred is the full story. There’s a level of emotional outrage that I feel can only be due to something else, something more personal.

Perhaps the best clue is in the second sentence. It is a common argument that OWS is made up of homeless slackers who want a free ride. But only those who feel enslaved by their own jobs and their own “work on this earth” would resent another for not wanting to participate. I wonder what “sub”‘s chosen profession is? Was it chosen? Sub, do you enjoy your “work on this earth”?

Yours truly,
Handy

Wall Street Sparcely Occupied

The cold weather has arrived to tail Mayor Bloomberg’s midnight raid on the Zuccotti encampment. I haven’t visited the protest site since the day after the raid. Today, around 9:30am, I strolled by.

Protesters on the EdgeThe cold, morning light revealed an empty park, completely surrounded by police barricades. As I neared it was unclear whether the three people standing just inside were protestors, beggars or guards. On closer inspection I concluded that there were two protesters, one with a sign, in debate with a passing messenger, the other standing nearby; and a third person skirting the line between protestor and beggar. His tin can was out to receive donations as he cradled a kitten in his jacket, his sign ambiguous.

Huddled MassesI walked around the barrier perimeter, wondering if there was an entrance, wondering how those protestors had gotten within. As I rounded the corner I noticed the protest proper: a group of about 10 men lurking over an empty carton that one must assume once contained breakfast. The park was clean and damp around them and the cold kept them moving. I continued around, finally locating a small aperture through the barricades, lorded over by a guard in flourescent vest and 3 bored cops. The side streets buzzed with police cars, and at a safe distance from the site a group of around 30 police were massed near a paddy wagon. One can only assume they were there just in case the protest returned.

Secret EntranceIt seems the protest site is dead, killed by Michael Bloomberg’s sweep under cover of darkness (media and otherwise). His covert action invigorated the protest for a day or two but then succeeded in its purpose. Without a physical encampment, and with the coming of the cold, fewer protestors are occupying Wall Street. In no way, do I presume that the movement itself has waned. Rather, it has moved to other sites and other phases of its cycle. I, for one, still carry the torch.

Why People Hate OWS

Bankers Feeling GuiltyIt’s been a mystery to me. Why are people so vehemently against the Occupy Wall Street movement? I hear genuine derision, mockery and plain hatred; which is difficult for me to bear as I see many good things in the movement and very little real threat to any status quo (sadly).

My cubicle neighbor was discussing the protests with a friend on the phone and I overheard. She was expressing disbelief that the protestors were blaming Wall Street for all the nation’s ills. She exhonerated the street by referencing a protestor’s signage. Apparently, the protestors sign read ‘Value Human Bonds, Not Treaury Bonds.’ She snickered to her phone mate.
“Treasury bonds are from the treasury, they aren’t stock or even C.O.D.s.” she noted, “So, you should be probably be protesting the Federal Governement, not Wall Street!”

Two things here. First, she is deriding the protestor for not being consistent with the message of the protest. Seconds, she is insinuating a lack of coherent message in the protest. These things are highly mockable, but seem to miss the point. What I think is more telling is her need to defend Wall Street. She’s taking it personally! That’s when I realized the answer to my question: People hate OWS because it’s a threat to their lifestyles. We are all complicit in the maintanence of the status quo. None of us are self sufficient, we all have bank accounts and buy things. We are all guilty of the excesses of our age. OWS is a threat to our way of life. Are you ready to change?

Financial District – NYC, November 17, 2011

Riot police Obstructing TrafficThe exits on the Wall Street 2/3 train were shut save one. We all shuffled through the congested tunnel, past multiple police, including the “white shirts,” looking exceptionally skittish. Finally out on the streets it looked like the war had come. Each corner was barricaded and entire streets cordoned off by police in riot gear, and mounted units. My fellow commuters and I were forced to skirt the entire Wall Street area, asked to show “employee ID” at certain points in order to be allowed to pass.

Mounted Police Obstructing Wall StreetOut on Broadway the sidewalk congestion was unbearable. I ventured into the street to make progress. I passed a news van with an open door. Inside, on the monitors, a group of police in riot gear were beating down on a kid, flailing on the ground. The news engineer had his hair in his hands.
“They’re just beating down on his head!” he exclaimed in despair. “These police are just way out of control.”

Further up the block a cop in a riot helmet, brandishing a billy club was saying “Walk on the sidewall.” I moved to go around him but he grabbed my arm, pulling me toward the sidewalk. I gently wrestled free. “Jesus, f*king christ!” was all I could think to say. I was already incensed.

Riot Police Guarding the Entrance to Chase BankThe entrance to The Bank was closed with riot police guarding the fence. Employees were forced another block around in order to get into work. Near my coffee shop a group of civilians was massed around an intersection occupied by riot police. I milled with them. People were shouting slogans and talking. One woman was singing Amazing Grace in operatic tones. Suddenly a group of the cops amassed at one corner. A young black man was gesticulating there. They seemed to talk for a bit. I assumed he was just another person trying to get through the barricaded street. Soon enough he was wrenched into the intersection and handcuffed. Then a cop reached into the crowd on the sidewalk and grabbed another, vaguely black kid, pulling him out onto the street and handcuffing him. I had noticed that kid earlier and had seen that he had broken no rule of law or even general morality. He had simply been standing there. He yelled as he was handcuffed. “I have broken no law. I have done nothing wrong.” quite coherently.

People in the crowd acknowledged that they had seen he was just standing there quietly. Someone took his name and entered it into their phone.

Riot Police Guarding the Entrance to Chase BankThe hour was drawing near and I crossed the line of riot police to enter The Bank. I showed my Food Co-op ID and was allowed in. Inside, traveling up the elevator, I felt disgusted with myself. How could I quietly go to work when the police my tax dollars employ were preventing me from walking the streets my tax dollars maintain, all because they had misguidedly decided to “crack down” on a peaceful protest? Nowhere during the morning were more than 50 protestors amasses. If there was a central protest happening I couldn’t see it. If I knew where it was I couldn’t get there. The only uncivilized behavior I could see was coming from tense police in riot gear obstructing public streets under some fabricated pretense that I doubt they could even verbalise. I am certain the Mayor eloquently speechified some imminent physical, or hygenic danger. Yes, there is danger, but it’s not coming from the protesters

It’s Dark Down Here

Say what you may about the rediculously innefectual protests two blocks away, the hatches here at the bank are firmly battened; though not a protester is in sight. The plaza is gated and employees – be they the 1% or the 99 – are forced to weave around police barricades to rotate through the basement doors. Once inside, the glass doors are closed save a small aperture lorded over by two guards. They stop me, having let the asian woman before me pass unmolested. “ID?” they ask. I liesurely retrieve my wallet; it’s the small rebellion that counts, I muse. I dig my fingers behind my wad of credit and debit cards, sliding the ID partially out and angling it toward the guard. He glances down and waves me on.

Inside descending the small stairs to the escalator that will take me up into the light of the main lobby, I look down to push the card back into my wallet. Only then do I realize it’s my Park Slope Food Coop ID.

Growing Cynicism

When the protests began any mention of them within the bank was met with a blank silence. More often than not this silence was accompanied by a staring at the floor. As time went on the protests came more easily to the tongue. They were mentioned in passing but no judgement had been settled upon. Within my own tech-savvy, relatively young group — which I do not feel comprises a typical bank demographic — it was suggested that we were part of “the 99%”.

As I exited the bathroom I noticed several people peering down out the windows. The bank had closed off the plaza so the protesters were clustered in a corner of the sidewalk, near the halal vendor, under the slight drizzle. We commented that it was quite a small group. It looked as they they were on line for chicken over rice. A middle aged woman smirked that she had heard that the protests swelled in the evening once the protesters got out of work. I attempted a pithy comment which I don’t think penetrated the angry jeers.

Over by my cube the bright the sound of drums and whistles could be heard from the street below. They may have been few but they sure were loud. The weird Asian girl mentioned how young the protesters seemed. I agreed, thinking to myself she was not much older. She posited a theory that they were all kids who had just come home from backpacking tours of Europe. Rather than look for jobs they had just brought their backpacks down here. Her scorn was like a thick coating on her words. I turned away, bewildered and confused, not sure what to make of such mockery.

A few minutes later the guy from Tennessee who sits behind me said he had heard that those marching on millionaire homes in the Upper East Side had wondered if the millionaires were home. “Of course not,” he snorted, “they’re at work!”

It seems a tide has turned here. What was originally dismissed as inconsequential, traveled through a period of uncertainty and has now settled into scorn. There seems a common thread in the commentary. These protesters are lazy, which is why they’re unemployed, which is why they have the opportunity, as well as the impetus to protest. Perhaps the scorn with which the bank workers regard the protests comes from jealousy for a freewheeling lifestyle.

I Occupy Wall Street

I come here twice a week. The subway lets me off in the basement of The Bank in which I work, just East of Broadway. In the morning I leave the building, crossing the street – further East – for my morning coffee. Very rarely do I venture West, where Broadway is clogged with tourists; and the clamber of the WTC re-build is loud enough to drown out the sound of a thousand industrial air conditioning units.

The last few weeks I have noticed a difference here. The door to my building is barricaded, everyone being forced through a single aperture where security guards look as if they are meant to be doing something. The main, street-level plaza is closed off. The protests are a block away.

One day last week I heard them beating drums and chanting in the street, 10 floors down. I cheered from my standing desk. Occasionally, in the hall I would mention to one of my colleagues that we should all go down and join the protest. I was met with stone faces.

Today, I arrived here and the barricades around the building were gone. The plaza was open and the suits were wandering freely in and out of the airy double doors. I decided today was the day I would walk West – to the protest to see what was happening.

I was scared. Would hidden cameras capture my likeness for a blacklist database? Would the protesters take one look at my purple gingham, button-down shirt tucked into my chinos and throw apples at me? Would there even be a protester in sight when I arrived, or did I miss the boat?

Cool morning light reflected off the tops of the buildings which preclude direct contact with the sun down here. I noticed shapes first. Shapes of bright colored plastic. Tarps and sleeping bags and other bundles of stuff were more evident than people. Either the few people who were there had an inordinate amount of possessions, or else most had gone around the corner for a hot brekky. A half-row of young men stood on Broadway, beating drums and chanting incoherently, stopping regularly to count “one, two, three, four..” and then launch onto a few more beats of the drum. Across the sidewalk, a row of sleepy cops lingered, staring blankly through the curtain of passing pedestrians. I walked into the square.

Piles of tarps were tucked away. A foppish young man was brutally weeding a bed of pansies which looked as patchy like a mangy dog. He seemed intent on his work and self important. A pretty young lady slung garbage bags near a long table covered with bagels and pastries. She smiled. A cordoned off area with a generator hosted a circle of macbooks manned by bleary-but-intent-eyes scouring some sort of information. The sign read: “Press Only, Please”. A row of books in boxes had been set up with a cardboard sign reading: “Library”. The library was organized by subject, including a healthy fiction section. Each book had “Occupy Wall Street” written on the fore edge.

Down the square further a stretch of signage lay on the ground. All manner of slogans had been painted onto all manner of materials, set out in a chaotic array. On top of these signs a young woman with a Black Flag jacket had thrown a plastic bottle which her pit bull was violently shaking. The young woman trod on the signs casually, with her Timberland boots, as she went to playfully remove the bottle from the snarling, drooling dog’s mouth.

On another side of the square cops were lined up at a breakfast cart. Behind them sat a circle of young people. A man stood in the middle holding a microphone and speaking. The microphone didn’t seem to be working and even standing at close range I could barely make out his words over the ambient rumble of a thousand air conditioning units, the huge construction site across the street, and the robust morning traffic. Yet the circle stared at him, attentive. The little I heard of his speech was something like: “…it’s that one officer, that one employee that we can change, that we can reach…”. I wandered around a bit more. Past gutter punks snoozing while photographer snapped their photos, smart-looking kids absorbed in eager discussion, and another circle of young people who seemed to be sharing ideas in the round. I sat for a while a tried to lend my physical mass to the cause, whatever it might be.

Though it looked much more like St. Marks place in the 80s than Tahrir Square, Zuccotti Park on September 30th, 2011 is all we have. The various injustices and initiatives espoused on placards and pamphlets are all valid, and though we all recognize their validity, we are complacent. Here on the 10th floor of The Bank, we are well nourished by the poisoned nipple. Even as I rationalize that fact in my own way I support the Occupy Wall Street protest, recognizing that we all wrestle with an ideological dichotomy. There is no way to drop out. We are group animals, highly intelligent and highly organized. We have created a very sophisticated society which has many positive benefits but is still a work in progress.

I am proud of these young people in Zuccotti Park for representing an initiative which can only be espoused by individuals, and will never be backed by corporate dollars. Even if they are not sure why they are there, or simply have nowhere else to go, they are together and organized. Nothing more is required in order to spring forth a new movement. What that movement is, and what it will be are unanswerable questions. There is no way of predicting what society will produce next. As the Nile valley rice farmer of the bronze age was not working toward computer-assisted derivatives trading, the protesters in Zuccotti Park have no idea where this will go. But, I do hope it goes somewhere, if only to afford us all a chance to find out where!
